Caffe Amici: Sydney (04 July 2012)

Tucked away amongst the buildings on Kent Street, Caffe Amici is a hidden gem that produces authentic well-priced pasta. It seems like one of those places that becomes known through word-of-mouth from happy customers, as I was taken there by M, whilst M was taken there by another friend and so on. Today we decided to split the safe option of bolognese, and the minestrone genovese which was listed on their specials board.

Daily specials
Complimentary bread basket

The friendly staff quickly brought out a complimentary basket of bread with mayonnaise, olive oil and balsamic vinegar and tomato chutney.

Complimentary dipping sauces for bread
Bolognese ($14)

The pasta was cooked al dente, with just the right balance between being slightly chewy and being cooked through. The tomato based sauce was sweet and rich in beef flavour, and coated each strand of pasta thoroughly.

Minestrone Genovese ($12.50)

An italian style soup with potato, carrots, celery, onion, green beans, borlotti beans, served with half the soup covered generously with soft parmesan shavings and a dollop of basil pesto in the centre. The minestrone was very filling and incredibly rich in flavour and texture, however I found it to be more on the oily side than what I am typically used to for minestrone soup. Since we shared the soup, it was very tasty and was balanced out well with the freshly toasted sourdough bread, but it would have probably been too rich for myself as a main.

The really lovely down-to-earth Italian speaking staff working at Caffe Amici makes the whole experience eating there even more enjoyable. The bolognese pasta is one of the better ones I’ve eaten for a while, so I can’t wait to go back to try out some more of their pastas. At around $10-15 for each main, Caffe Amici offers well-priced mains at a central location.
