Last week (or was it the week before?) we crossed the bridge and headed to Bondi for some shared comfort food with fellow bloggers at Good Time Diner. With both an entrance from street level as well as via Westfield (just a few steps away from Zara) the restaurant is quite easily accessible, although we still managed to get lost on the way there. Inspired by the underground bar scene of Old New Orleans, the atmosphere in the Diner didn’t quite capture that vibe for us but it is still early days. The dinner menu seemed promising and is designed to be shared amongst friends and family, with offerings such as their slow cooked prime meats and a long cocktails list to boast.
We were here tonight to sample their Dinner Club menu and to start the evening off we had the GoodTime Charcuterie Plate that consisted of smoked pork belly, smoked cheese, gherkins, smoked nuts and salami. The lashings of pork belly fat topped off with the crunchy gherkin slices is probably enough to get me drooling any day!
The board was then followed by a few “comfort food” dishes including the garlic bread, charred cajun corn and mac & cheese. This was the highlight of the meal for me, and I could have easily gone home happy with these three comfort food sides! I think it’s difficult to get garlic bread wrong, and Good Time Diner certainly had a good ratio of garlic butter to crispy bread ratio happening. The Charred Cajun Corn was my favourite part of the meal, and had a generous slathering of fragrant butter melted into the corn with a slightly spicy cajun kick in it. The Mac & Cheese was presented in a warm homely manner in a individual bake dish with oozing cheese running down the sides. The crispy cheesy parts on the top of the dish were moreish, and I only wish there was more of that crispiness in proportion to the gooey cheesy mac part of the dish.
By the time mains came we were pretty full but who could resist a chocolate brownie looking slab of 12 hour slow cooked Beef Short Rib slab or the southern spiced chicken? The meat in the beef short rib was tender and fragrant, though I felt it could have benefited with more sauce as it was getting dry towards the centre. The Southern Spiced Chicken was faultless and was moist, tender and well seasoned.
To keep our arteries happy, we also had the Cous Cous, Chickpea, Pine Nuts & Roast Pumpkin Salad and the Fennel, Goats Cheese, Pear & Spinach Salad.
All in all, it was a great night, and we had fun meeting other bloggers over belly warming comfort food in a chilled, relaxed surrounding served by attentive staff. Many thanks to Carlos at Good Time Diner for organising the dinner!
