One of the best restaurants in Phuket to enjoy cocktails and food over breathtaking views is Joe’s Downstairs. Following on from a recommendation from our hotel, we found our way to this beautiful restaurant located right on the water overlooking Kalim Bay. We arrived around 5pm which gave us plenty of time to settle in and order a few cocktails before the sunset began. They describe their cuisine as New World Cuisine that seems to basically translate to a mixture of appetisers and tapas with an extensive drinks menu.
Below is a photographic recount of what we ate! For starters we had the crispy soft shell crab served with tamarind dipping sauce and the crispy skin Peking Duck Rolls. For our “mains” we had the Miso Glazed Black Cod with Fresh Mango Salsa and Sesame Cabbage, the Pineapple BBQ glazed Baby Back Ribs, their Rock Lobster Quesadilla with Monterey Jack Cheese and fresh Tropical Fruit Salsa and lastly the White Snapper & Leek Tempura Rolls with Citrus Soy Syrup.
From the tapas, the Rock Lobster Quesadilla was the most memorable. The oozing subtle-flavoured monterey jack cheese tasted delicious amongst the fresh juicy lobster pieces, and was well complemented by the sweet and slightly acidic fruit salsa. We finished the meal by sharing their Warm Apple Pie that is also worth a mention. I’m a crust person and I absolutely loved the thick buttery flaky crust that came with their home made apple pie (check out the picture below to see the crust!). The warm apple filling wasn’t overly sweet and I loved the combination of the apple pie served with caramel ice cream and fresh crunchy green apple slices.
Whilst definitely on the more expensive side of dining in Phuket, it’s worth the $$ for the views and food. They also offer complimentary pick up and drop off if your hotel is relatively close by. Tip: The views of sunset are amaaaazing so aim to get there at least 30 minutes before sunset. The drivers can be late and it would give yourselves some time to settle in!
